Innateness – the notion that certain characteristics, capacities, tendencies, or forms of knowledge are inherent to an organism rather than acquired through experience. The concept concerns what is present by virtue of biological inheritance, developmental processes, or the structure of the organism itself, and has played a central role in debates about the origins of perception, language, cognition, behavior, and human development.
